Ik begon ook steeds meer met hen te praten. Eén van de gynaecologen van Free Clinic zei dat, als we niet opletten, het mogelijk is dat we niet zouden merken dat een vrouw besneden is. Bij een geïnfibuleerde vrouw zie je het hoe dan ook, maar… bij besneden vrouwen is het mogelijk dat we de besnijdenis niet opmerken. Als we een gynaecologisch onderzoek uitvoeren, kijken we namelijk niet automatisch of de vrouw wel een clitoris heeft. En als wij er niet over spreken met de vrouw, zal zij er ook niet over spreken!
It is true that you may not notice that a woman is mutilated if you don’t pay attention, just like a gynaecologist at the Free Clinic said. You can’t miss that a woman is infibulated, but if she is excised, you may not see it. Gynaecologists and doctors don’t always check if there is a clitoris. And if you don’t mention it, the woman is not likely to do so either!
Et c’est vrai que, comme disait une gynécologue de la Free Clinic, les dames qui sont excisées, si on ne fait pas attention, on peut passer à côté. Une femme infibulée, on ne peut pas passer à côté mais… une femme excisée, nous pouvons ne pas le voir, nous ne regardons pas d’office si une femme a un clitoris, lorsque nous faisons un examen gynécologique. Et si on n’en parle pas à la femme, elle ne va pas nous en parler !

When I looked at all that was done at the level of prevention against FGM and when I took a step back, I had the feeling that everything was meant for raising awareness amongst women. In most of the books I read, I observed that a lot of things were done for women not to let their children, their daughters, undergo FGM. But I didn’t see, or barely did, actions that focused on men, dads. But I think that most of the societies that are affected by FGM are patriarchal societies. That is to say that men have the “power”, or the authority, officially or not.
